Turns out it&#8217;s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_sign#Japan_and_the_V_sign">because of an American figure skater&#8217;s activism</a>. At least in part. (Don&#8217;t worry, it&#8217;s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_sign#The_V_sign_as_an_insult">still insulting</a> elsewhere.)</p>
