Gimme GIM!
August 23, 2005
Okay, enough talk about ugliness. Let's try out Google's new IM service before it launches tomorrow!
Yay for people figuring things out. I'd feel bad for Google's PR department that things are leaking out (I'm sure they have a much more interesting, pigeon-powered description of the service) but on the other hand, this can't be bad for buzz.

Don't get me wrong, it is fun that people figured out the server settings, but I do hope there is more to this Google Talk than just a Google run Jabber server.
Yeah, I don't think it'll just be a Jabber server. Seems like there's a bit more to it. I mean, Google tries to make everything as user friendly as possible. I don't think Jabber's too user friendly, although it's cool.
The site is live right now actually: Google Talk. It is a windows only IM client. The revolution will not be cross-platform.
It's alive now. http://talk.google.com
I've been talking to a few people via my Google account tonight using GAIM and it seems fine. Now Google Talk has the application available for download.
I think this whole thing was a big let down. I don't know how much you can improve on all the existing IM programs - just because it's google doesn't mean everyone is going to abandon what they already use.
Although I want to give Google some leeway cos Google Talk is in its Beta, I sure feel its a big let down.
Like donnie put it, most people wont abandon their IM programs for Google(I sure wont abandon MSN).But
it sure will be interesting to see whether Google Talk can match/surpass the MSN/Yahoo hegemony.
