Unfortunately, just as it did with ODB, the bloat-face reportedly comes from bad habits more serious than the dietary.

There was a very sympathetic interview in the Believer (print only - I think 2004) with that guy from the Roots in which he talked candidly about D'Angelo's suffering - how he absolutely hated being the abs poster guy and how he'd shudder when the crowd of teenage girls would go wild. How he is supremely talented, but not quite able to manage the career. As usual, the very best artists are very sensitive, and thus fall easily for strong medication. It's a tender article, worth looking for.

D'Angelo has gotten even fatter now. I saw a picture of him on the beach without a shirt and he has a huge gut and love handles and his once pecs have turned into soft man boobs. Man he must be eating like crazy

Yes I read that interview before. He said that D'Angelo actually wanted to get fat so that people would respect his music and not his ripped stomach. It's all making sense now! I did not actually think he would do it though thats surprising! wow

I heard this too, but find it hard to believe. The mugshot doesn't prove that he got that fat. People can look puffed up in the face from too much drinking. Where can I find the fat picture of him on the beach?

Did anybody else see that thing were he said the only problem with being fat was that he busted all the buttons out of his old pants? weird if I busted out my pants I would probably start going to the gym. I find this funny because back when he used to be all cut he said he never went to the gym. Well looks like the munchies caught up with him!

I saw this picture of him in the paper up against his hot photo (from untitled). I knew I wasn't the only person who thought it was ODB at first. Omg did anyone see those pictures of Colin Ferral on the beach? He has put on a lot of weight. A BEER BELLY! I couldn't believe it. Colin holds the weight better than D'Angelo though. I'm still extremly atracted to Collin, the belly is kind of cute. But D'Angelo just looks gross.

D'Angelo is a musical genius and I hope that he can get his life back together to make more albums on his own terms-- whether he's ripped, fat or whatever. I think the music world is much the worse without him.

I happen to know Michael on a personal level. I was browsing the internet and came across this site. I am disgusted that people can be so hateful and mean about something as simple as a man's weight. He has changed in so many ways since his voodoo album he is a more spiritual man now. His desisicion to gain weight was to make people apreciate him for his talents and not his looks. He is still a gorgeous man inside and out and will always be. People act like he gained 300 pounds and became a coke junky. The drug issue I will not get into, but it is not as serious as people probably believe. Michael has only gained 40 pounds in the past year and a half. So to sum things up D'Angelo is trying to be as genuine as possible so that everyone can respect his art instead of his abs.

I give props to the last post. Who cares if D'Angelo put on weight. Anybody can get in shape, but nobody can write, play and sing like D'Angelo. I have near a thousand albums and VooDoo is one of the best. He did new things with music and also drew on so much. I really believe he is a genius.

I hope he stays fat when his new album is released that way we can see how superficial that fattest country in the world can be!

I personally thing D'Angelo is one of the sexiest men that has ever graced the music industry. As a muscian, vocalist and a woman in this treacherous industry I know it can be difficult to hold your head high.
So To: D'Angelo, Be blessed. Keep your head up and know that you are loved. One day I hope to work with you! It has been a dream of mine this long. I know it will come true. Keep on doing what it do baby!!

Fat or slim he is still a genius this man took soul music to another level with voodoo and I'm certain he'll do the same with the next masterpiece, I'm in South Africa and its unbelievable how much of a fan base D'angelo's got here. We are all human and go through changes in our lives only God can judge him let him be!!!!!!

I came upon this site by typing "d'anglo problems album" because what is important to me is getting to hear more great music made by an amazing musician. I want a new album.

I'm a hetero white guy so I could give a sh*t what he looks like. Unfortunately, I'm sure that there are 100 wet bimbos for every one of me. Add the media factor and it isn't hard to see how you would react in his position. I'm sure it's cool at first but being in the spotlight for your body, especially when you brighter features, wouldn't be cool. Just look at the "shock" and focus of this thread.

I just hope he is cool with himself and happy. And that he wants to release another album.

In the mean time, you should check out some of his live stuff available on youtube. He does the classic "Use Me" with Eric Clapton, David Sanborn, and other greats. "Chicken Grease" from the Chris Rock show is the shtuff.

Sigh... Respect the man and his MUSIC. Respect his need for space, his need like all of US to regroup, to sort out, to seek answers and to just be. Yes this business is cold and the world we live in so spoiled on some instant gratification shit. hey, lets try to sum up points w/o calling people morons okay? i only ask about the photo, because i won't believe it unless i see it.

however, i do agree with some of posters here. D is a true musician, but he is a HUMAN BEING FIRST!! the way some of you people idolize celebrites is uncanny and inhuman! You forget that celebrities are everyday people like you and me, except their lives are exposed and seen by others. (sometimes without their knowledge or consent). the real sad part is the ones moaning about D' putting on all that weight and fleeing, were the same ones claiming to be his '#1 fan' and will be the same ones going back to throw themelves at him like nothing happened or you were with him since day one, after he loses the weight.

for the most part, we should be happy that D' and some other artists care about making MUSIC rather than money, because that's what most of these r&b singers are about these days.

I definetly agree with the statement about liking him fat or not, but i think it's sad he felt he needed to gain weight just to feel respected. He has won Grammy's, sounds like respect to me! D is one of my favorite artist and i got mad respect for him fat or thin, however coming from a female i am not ashamed to admit that when he had a slimmer, HEALTHY body his music was just sexier knowing that it was coming from such a sexy man, and it aint nothing wrong with that! Before the interview, i dont think people understood what was going on with him, and thought he was just letting him self go which is, lets be real, not appealing. I agree with all the comments about his weight not mattering. What no one has mentioned is he was large before he was even a star and his lithe body was manufactured for stardom. Remember he has a child with Angie Stone who is another brilliant artist and plus size. I feel his weight now is probably closer to his natural weight than the chisled ab weight. And who really cares anyways? His voice is the heaviest thing I've ever heard and I'm gonna say it's as good or better tha Marvin Gaye's.

The real problem with D'Angelo is not that he gained weight. There a lot of talented heavies that get love and appreciation accross the board. His real problem is that he allowed his personal appearance to be the focal point of his image. It became kind of like the D'Angelo Brand, Flat Abs and Good music. It's like going to McDonald's and finding that they don't serve those greasy juicy burgers you associate with the McDonald 's brand. You'd be disappointed. If he never wanted his looks to take center stage, perhaps he should have embraced a different image and appearance instead of going with the stereotypical "musicians have flat abs". Therein lies the source of the problem. As an artist how do you brand yourself. Let the image you project reflect your values. Not projecting one thing and simultaneously expressing an internal disharmony with your exterior.

I think the issue with D'Angelo gaining weight, has blown out of proportion! I'm a big fan of his and know for sure that there's NO living being who can do what this man does, musically. So Fat or 6-packed- D'ANGELO'S STILL PHAT! He's human too. Give the brother a break. LOVE U D!

D'Angelo next album please. VooDoo was hot! But I think you are shooting yourself in the foot. You put out a video where you were "butt-naked" now you complain you wish people would respect you for your music and not your abs. Can't agree with you there, sorry. But I love your music!

Still playing the previous two albums and an obscure mix album called D'Angelo- YODA, The monarch of neo-soul, its an interesting album and definately worth checking out, some unheard material which is worth hearing!!! BUT..still in desperate need of a new album,word round the camp-fire is that it called 'James River', just what I heard, sorry to all you people who wanted me to comment about how fat he is, or was, but I'm not f****n' interested, he has got my attention cuz of his superb musical talent, fat or thin, I love the guy.
