WSJ stupidity

October 12, 2004

How bad does the Wall Street Journal's editorial judgement suck? I will show you! OpinionJournal, home to James "he whom I asked to kiss my brown ass" Taranto, has posted an editorial which bravely defends "Let's Get Retarded", the original title to the Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started".

On what grounds? Freedom of speech? No! Bridget Johnson is very concerned that people not accede to the demands of the Association for Retarded Citizens that the marginalized group that they represent not be insulted by having the word "retarded" used pejoratively. Indeed, Bridget bravely defends the right of people to be insulting assholes towards people who are mentally retarded.

But it's all okay, because Bridget had a retarded friend growing up. Bravo, Bridget, you're a class act.

You know what's strange? I actually prefer "Let's get it started" as the lyrics to the song. It makes more sense, and the rythmn works better to my ear.

I've never seen such a divergence between usually sound reporting and an editorial page with such a marked level of sucktitude.

I think it's stupid when people get so offended about a word used in an editorial, especially such a generic word like 'retarded,' which to my mind means slow or delayed, machinery, growth of plants, chemical reactions can all be said to be 'retarded.'

You know, that whole issue is so Bridget Johnson. I mean, anybody who would take offense at something like that is totally a Bridget Johnson.

As the father of an autistic 4-year-old, I get to look forward to years of people saying hurtful things to my sweet, innocent, beautiful little boy. I already get to hear his sister's friends calling him "weird" and "stupid" and "strange." After a long day of struggling to work with Jared, to care for his incredibly hard-to-meet needs, to overcome the difficulties of his disability, it's really hard not to punch somebody who says something unkind to my boy. I just hope nobody calls him a Bridget Johnson.
