I'd been playing with a redesign concept a few months ago that I never got around to finishing, so I thought I'd put it up for comments from all of you, and perhaps one of you clever folks can figure out why the sidebar links move around in Internet Explorer on Windows. Please be kind, I'm no designer...

what do you mean exactly by "move around" ? i've just tested in IE5.5/Win2k, and nothing's moving. ok, the width is different due to IE's faulty box model...but otherwise it looks same-ish...?

Your links inside the "info" div is indeed moving. Daily links seems to be okay. I'm using IE6.0/Windows NT 5.0

If you mouse over links in IE6/Win, the sidebar links go all wonky.

And anonymous cowards get no love for their comments. I will now add EXTRA PURPLE!

some :hover action on the links would be nice - I've got no other issues with the sidebar links (Camino & Safari)

Overall it looks good. I dig the larger type in the body. But, you might want to even up the margins/padding in your grid - I'd like to see better alignment between content in the left and right columns.

And lastly, double check the link to the sample from this post in your rss feed... (in NNW at least) its off by an "anil/"

I think it looks good. Up the line-spacing in the body text to improve readibility, perhaps?

I'm also a big fan of adding a gratuitous face photo that takes up the whole screen. Like 800 pixels high, minimum.*

starting in the past week or two (I was on vacation so I'm not sure when), your site became unreadable in safari. . the font is all weird. I'm on a PC in IE right now and it looks fine. Not sure what the deal is.

regarding the new design:

I'd also increasing the line height in the body copy. And (!important) add about 7px of padding between the daily links (which probably should in a list if you're a stickler about those type of thing) Also, might be nice to find something (other than a squidfingers pattern) to fill the empty space to the right

Ah, okay, in the sidebar "base" (div class="info"), the links slide to the left when one mouses over them.

It appears that the 5% value in .info is what's giving you fits:

padding: 15px 15px 15px 5%;

That's the value for padding-left (the direction toward which the link is sliding), and IE6 must not like something about how the text changes on hover ... maybe the pixel value of 5% changes, andn IE just throws up its hands.

Anyway, I changed the percentage to a pixel value, and that eliminated the sliding.

Give that a shot, eh?

if you're gonna tweak your site, for godsake get Mena to redesign it. she's like, a designer. she makes things, like, pretty. you're just some smart tech guy. it'll be like some sort of reverse queer eye for the straight guy thing. you'll love it. it'll be FABulous.

I like it, nice simple evolution.

A bit more space between the bottom of the entries and the following title would help. To me having the dates smaller than the text is a bit weird when placed in that order, I'd make it the same or then put it at the bottom next to the comments link. Rollover action in the sidebar definitly required and I'm with Ryan on the line height and padding.

Looks great in Safari ... but that left content box could be a wee bit wider, no? And you could make it easier to TrackBack to one of your articles? Did you purposefully make it difficult to do without autodiscovery?

Hey Anil, are you going to post anything about FreshDirect anytime soon? I predict that I'm going to be really upset when their free $50 promotion lapses on 9/1 - and they still don't deliver to my neighborhood! Your site is such a friendly place to vent! *smile!*

I would decrease the font size in the body, increase line-height, and definitely get rid of the black background + 'black space' on the right side. It makes it look so dreary - another, lighter shade of gray or white would look much nicer I think.

Even better, I would just make it stretch to the whole width of the browser window -- keeping the right column with a fixed width and letting the body stretch. And then after the right column ends it could be the same purple as up top-left -- that would kind of echo the design you've got now.

Win2K - IE6...it's not just the sidebar links that slide when you mouse over. Mousing over anything with a link causes a slide to the left, including SOME of the blog text and the title graphic. See the results here .

Looks great in Mozilla 1.4 though!

I also don't dig the bigger text, but who am I to judge.

I experience the same thing as spygeek: when I mouse over a link in the main (left) column, the padding changes for a section of the text, making that section wider than the rest of the copy. Happens only when mousing over a link. The sidebar is unaffected.

I like it. I visit more often for the sidebar links than the main content (especially since the links are updated more frequently) so it's nice to see them in a larger font and closer to the top of the page.

I'm experiencing the same problem as Matthew wrt the top-right "wishlist" link disappearing in Opera 7/Windows. Maybe move the search box to the right, or something? Looks great in Firebird, though...

Look good, but I'd recommend differentiating the different categories a bit more with color and or typography. For instance, the dark purple headers look good but the subnav under the search box should probably be different than the logo and tagline, which look like links. Best wishes.

Changed all 5% values in css to 65px - no more moving and all lined up well under IE6.

Purple and gray works well - not so partial to the white space or rather large font size.
