return of the crazy person
November 4, 2002
Someone's been spamming comment forms on weblogs with an Amazon affiliate link to Meg, Matt and Paul's book, "We Blog". You can see examples here, here, here and here. I noticed a lot of these links posted in response to posts about the Blogger hack, as if the publication of the book, or perhaps its mere existence, was explanation for the hack having happened.
There are also repeated references to the book being a way to make money off of weblogs. While I don't know the specifics of their book deal, I know a decent amount about the economics of the publishing industry, and I can't imagine they've made anything other than a pittance off of the work they put in.
So why is this nutcase going around promoting the book with an affiliate link? For the one or two dollars in affiliate fees? Nope. It's because the alleged author, George Brody, is probably the same insane person who's posted as "neu" or "neuroprosthesis" at other sites and created the Neuroprosthesis weblog. Her real name is probably Gyongyi Gaal, and she's gone off on some weird anti-weblog rants before, though she appears to be a legitimate neuroprosthesis researcher, in addition to her weird fixation on these authors.
The affiliate code for the links uses the name "New York on Film". A Google search of that phrase leads to the Neuroprosthesis weblog, although Google reveals that the name was only used on inbound links and does not appear in the page itself. That being said, the tone, phrasing, and sheer weirdness of the accusations is well in character for this particular crank. I'm always interested in online crazies and Neu/George/Gyongyi appears to be another one of them. I thought you might find this person's fixation as fascinating as I do.

Good research there; I didn't see the pattern you describe above, I just found the "spam" annoying and removed the URL...
The Editor at ScrappleFace has deleted the shamelessly commercial comment from this serious news site. How dare someone try to make money from the internet. ScrappleFace stands with others in saying "Not in our name!"
Thanks for the update on "George Brody," and the more extensive list of places where the inappropriate humping has taken place.
I claim credit for following "George" and leaving notes calling attention to this practice at TCS, ScrappleFace, and (maybe, I don't know if it is still up) at The Buck Stops Here.
(Aside: The link might not generate much in the way of sales of that book, but, anyone who follows the link and then subsequently buys (most) anything on Amazon over the next few days will generate a 5% commission on that sale.)
I think that you are onto something, though, in that the poster is not doing it for the money alone.
Do we have a cyber equivalent of lithium to pass to our online crazies?
Hehe, I left the link, just changed it to my own affiliate account. It is apparently a good book, and a useful thing for people to read, and if people click through, I will happily make money off the spammer. :-D
It would be simple to write a regex in your scripting language of choice to replace all Amazon affiliate links with your own affiliate account, or remove the affiliate link entirely.
I got one of those "clue" comments, and wrote a post about it here after realizing that "Brody" was going down blogdex's list of sites which had linked to status.blogger.com after the blogger hack.
When there was rampant blog referral log spamming, someone came up with a blacklist. Why aren't people posting the IP addresses used by this Gaal person so we can blacklist those as well?
Sure thing: 172.192.92.122
Why don't you publish the IP address of the person who hacked into Blogger?
Surely it's more important, than the IP address of the person who leaves this nice Amazon.com book link, even if it's a clue:
We Blog: Publishing Online with Weblogs
by Paul Bausch, Matthew Haughey, Meg Hourihan
Some people just don't know how to quit when they're behind.
I don't know the IP address of who hacked into Blogger. What is the book a clue to, my mentally disturbed friend?
Anil: are you generalizing from your own mental disturbance to everyone in the Universe? Go and take your medication. It seems to be overdue, but it may help. Rest assured, your kind of maniac depression is not as bad as you think. You can live with it for a long time.
I challenge you to publish the IP address of the person who hacked into Blogger. Then we can talk.
Some people just don't know how to quit when they're behind.

While some would go to any length to get noticed for a microsecond.
Here is the heartbreaking story of mentally disturbed Dash before he deletes it from Google cache:
[she reposted by entire October 27th post here. deleted for space, and also so we're not indulging too much lunacy.]
As October expired into November, so did the "new posts" front page turn a new leaf.
Try checking out the permanlink -- http://www.dashes.com/anil/index.php?archives/003804.php -- instead of the google cache.
Thanks.
Um, Gyongi? I really don't know the IP of the person who hacked Blogger. Are you trying to tell us it was you? I'm not, for what it's worth, on any medications. But I can help you find resources to get a doctor to prescribe some for you, if you're interested.
And thanks for reposting one of my own weblog entries to my site a mere week after I posted it. Saves me the whole bother of writing new stuff.
Gyongi, are you under the impression that Anil runs Blogger? It seems that, with your obsession with the product, you'd recognize that Anil has nothing to do with it, and thus, couldn't begin to know the specifics of who hacked into the site.
You're a strange one...
Are you saying that the book is a clue at to who hacked Blogger? It sounds as if you are suggesting it was the authors of the book.
Anil, are you suggesting that "neuroprosthesis" is responsible from now on for anything YOU post or write, simply because google will find an inbound link to that site from your Weblog? Your logic seemed to work well for "New York on Film".
It's unfortunate then that you are not taking your medications any more, as you claim.
Publish the IP address of the person who hacked into Blogger. What's in it for you, by the way?
Hey, if I had the IP, I'd have published it long ago. You seem to think you know who did the hack, so why don't you spill the beans?
Anil, you are now Number 2 on google.com for the Search
"new york on film"
That proves that you are Woody Allen.
Wow, there's all kinds of loose associations goin' on in the mind of "George."
Non-sequitor, anyone?
so we're not indulging too much lunacy
No, Anil, don't worry. You described your own mental illness quite eloquently, yet nobody would dare to call it lunacy.
Yet you raise an interesting issue here. You can now keep emailing to MSNBC, slander anyone, yet you don't have to take responsibility for any of your words. After all, you published on your private Web site, that you have a documented mental illness. Seven years cannot be an accident or misdiagnosis even in a city where quite a few parents tend to have their children overdiagnosed and overmedicated.
As a Village Voice journalist, who evidently is good with all kinds of weird associations, based on google-ing, you could write a follow-up article, what else you could get away with based on your mental disturbance? What an enviable position you are in.
I left the SPAM comments in my weblog, just wondering WTF was going on. And I do have the IP, and it's the same one Shane listed above. And as I can see here, it mirrors the original Neu ramblings.
Kids!
There's more background info on this wacko here (a mirror of a deleted metatalk thread.)
Gah, don't even get me started on those neuroprosthesis people. They spammed starjewel and then took offense when I looked into it.

Sometimes you win.
Especially if you cheat. Surely there were quite few important cheatings and winnings during the past two days.
And that may soon lead to World Word 3.
If that happens, people of color, of which Anil Dash is one, will be very strongly affected. Please note, that Anil Dash invented the expression "People of Color".

It must have been a big trauma for you. You keep posting about it and complaining in other people's comments boxes ever since. Is that why you got into all those car accidents, and eventually you got fired too?
Wow, I hadn't seen that deleted metatalk thread before, the resemblence of how neu/gaal can't take criticism, won't listen to people trying to help, and instead attacks everyone based on flimsy unsupported "arguments" and the way "george" can't take criticism, has nothing to support the blogbook-authors-as-hackers idea, and lashes out on everyone's weaknesses is uncanny.
Keep posting gaal, you're a hoot and the more you post, the more people will know that you have a thing for google bombing, comment spamming, and attacking innocent bystanders with unsupported claims. The more people that know that, the easier it is to ignore your ridiculous behavior and write it off as the ravings of a madwoman.
It's getting worse. Look at neuroprosthesis.org again.
has nothing to support the blogbook-authors-as-hackers idea

Who is it you are trying to help, concerned anonymattie?
So which one of you claimed first that the authors of the book hacked into Blogger? Which IP address did you use, anonymattie?
Now look at Dog Poop of Death again.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/2408153.stm
Should you not concentrate on this World News instead, concerned anonymattie? Surely it's going to influence the world more than your "support the blogbook-authors-as-hackers idea", however concerned you are about that. What makes you so concerned anonymie?
So which one of you claimed first that the authors of the book hacked into Blogger?
You're the one that posted this in response to blogger being hacked posts:
"Here is your clue.
We Blog: Publishing Online with Weblogs
by Paul Bausch, Matthew Haughey, Meg Hourihan"
What makes you so concerned anonymie?
I'm concerned because you already spammed my blog, and hope it doesn't happen again. I suspect since Anil outed you, there will be more spam comments about Anil coming next.
Your logic is as flawed as your concern anonymattie.
"Here is your clue" is not necessarily equal to what you claimed.
Anil outed himself. He does not have to be the owner of Blogger/Pyra to know the IP address of the hacker.
So why'd you post that spam on my blog's comment form? What was your point?
tackle her!
concerned anonymattie, I don't know who you are, I don't know what blog you write, so I cannot answer your question. Maybe you are lying. Maybe you are Anil Dash. In that case, you may want to explain why you started this thread in the first place. Nobody left the title of that book in Anil Dash's comments book before he posted about it, so it would be interesting to hear, why he wanted to get noticed once again.
tackle her!

interventionist, are you high now that the republicans are taking over the world, and that gets you into such a feisty mood? In my opinion it's really bad news for unemployed web techies. They do need to hack into more than Blogger in the future to survive.
I outed myself? You're not being cryptic, Gyongyi, you're being completely incoherent. If you're trying to communicate something, simply say it. If you're unable to articulate your ideas in a way that others can understand, there might be a more serious problem.
Regarding the connection between "George Brody", "New York on Film", and Neuroprosthesis, this search leads to this Google cache which (when one scrolls down) reveals that blo.gs saw http://www.neuroprosthesis.org/ ping weblogs.com as "New York on Film" 11:49am Aug 31 2002.
George, what *is* your point with the original comment you spammed sites with?
I was fired? News to me... I've worked at the same place for several years now. *laugh* Anil... your poor comments are so far off topic.

Anil THAT SEARCH leads to you.
Case closed.
Perhaps a Woman who belongs to your type of People of Color could help you.
http://www.dashes.com/anil/index.php?archives/003804.php
Gyongyi, what's your issue with the phrase "people of color" now? You are spewing too many different threads of incoherence.
Also, you can collect unemployment after leaving a job or being laid off, it's not generally an indication that one was fired.
I've worked at the same place for several years now.
Kimmie, you may want to give some lessons in logic to Anil, he is only a Village Voice flasher after all. If you are a Woman of People of Color, that is. Be careful with him though, he is a bit Anti-Semitic.
http://www.dashes.com/anil/index.php?archives/003804.php
I have no idea why people watch TV, Gyongyi, because you really are more entertaining than any form of entertainment that a sane person could conjure up.
I'm assuming, since you're able to hold down a job, that there must be some portion of the day where you're rational. I'm curious why you don't want to actually communicate with anyone, instead relying on oblique references to your paranoid delusions?
